The Gift

Blogging is one of my passions. Its something I love to do and its something I know my family enjoys. It allows family far away and even close to watch Alex and our family grow and feel like they are apart of each and every day.

It's a place to store our memories, create new memories or just write down my thoughts about the day or week. It's just like a journal to me but it doesn't show my crappy handwriting, even though my mom has to call me up and tell me I spelled words wrong and I have to go back and correct it ( thanks mom )!

Blogging is a place where I have made new friends, learned a lot about parenting and relationships, learned new craft ideas for the kids and found out about lots of fun places to shop or things to buy for little girls/boys/babies!

But most of all I have blogged because I didn't want to forget all the little things about Alex growing up. I want to create this for her and to have for her to look back on when she is older, maybe even one day take it over or start her own blog. I was always worried that one day I would wake up and it wouldn't be there anymore. I knew I had to have a hard copy and I knew that if I tired to do it myself, I would never complete it.

So for Christmas I contacted Carrie at Your Blog To Book Design, not knowing she lived in Minnesota ( like us ). I wanted to see what it would take to get Alex blog put into a Hard Cover Book. A book that I could hold in my hands and show to everyone, Alex Baby Book!

My mind is full of ideas when it came to turning this into an actual book. I didn't want just my blog transferred over. I had lots of things to add from myspace, from before Alex was born. I had things on the side of my blog and below that I wanted to make sure was included. I knew I had pictures, a lot of them and even after going through every post Alex book ended up with 1,016 pictures in it. I also wanted grandparents, Chad and I, aunts & uncles or friends to write letters to Alex ( which some did but I didn't include them and now they will be handwritten by the people who choose and I will have a envelope included with her book ).

As Carrie described Alex Book, "240 pages full of photographs ( 1016 of them!) of Alex first two years. This is a baby book unlike any you've ever seen. Carrie was amazing, she worked well with me and she had so many ideas of her own but was sure to include the ideas I had had.

You can check out a peak of Alex book here. We love it, its so meaning full and I know it's something she will truly appreciate one day. If you have ever thought about turning your blog into a book, I would highly recommend Carrie. She is amazing and she gets everything perfect!

Oh that is so neat! It looks really good! I've been wanting to turn my blog into a book too. I thought about asking for it for Christmas but didn't because I didn't know how much I should have in there before I did it. Like should I get 1 at the end of each year or what? How did you decide when to "publish" it?

I will definitely post more pictures of the baby's room when we get it finished, but for now it's just her crib & the guest bed in there! Not much to see! haha How is your baby's room coming along? Not much longer! I think Riley will be a good big brother. He LOVES babies & gets so excited when he sees one. I just hope it doesn't change when it comes to a baby being there 24\7. He is definitely a mama's boy so I hope he does ok with sharing me all the time! How do you think Alex will do? Does she really understand what's going on & that she's about to have a baby brother or sister? Riley of course has no clue what's going on!

You had some brilliant ideas for Alex's book Erin!
Thanks for the lovely write up about the book!

To answer a couple of questions that people have asked:

Jessica, some people print a book from Jan-Dec, others choose a child's birthday as the starting point for a year's worth of posts, and still others use their blogging anniversary. It's up to you - the only restriction is that books can only be 430 pages long.

Stephanie, the final cost will all depend on how much content there is. The first 50 pages are $200 and then it's an additional $2 per page after that. I do offer discounts on additional copies of the same book (50% off) and a $25 discount if I make more than one book. Other people charge less but I spend SO much time making each book special and accurate that my prices reflect my investment.

I am happy to offer advice to anyone who wishes to make their own blog book - I use Blurb.com and have many sample books in my bookstore for inspiration.

There are also tips on my website for conserving pages and making your book the best it can be.

Hope that helps!
