"Preemie" is the common term used when referring to a premature baby. The dictionary definition of a preemie is "a prematurely born infant". A preemie is born before 37 weeks gestation while a full term baby is born is born at 37 weeks or after. Preemies normally require a very different start in life.

The technical term for preemie is defined as a baby that is under 5 1/2 pounds. Statistics for preemie survival is greater than 90%.

Common symptoms in a premature infant include: low birth weight, body hair, episodes o absent breathing, lung problems, poor feeding, soft, flexible ear cartilage, thin, smooth, shiny skin, weak cry, usually inactive, wrinkled features

Why She Was Born Early
ICP In Pregnancy

ICP is defined as a pregnancy related liver condition that affects the flow of bile to a woman's body. This condition results in a build-up of bile acids in the blood, which in turn can lead to severe itching, and in more rare cases, jaundice. The onset of ICP during pregnancy usually begins during the 3rd trimester - as this is when hormone concentrations are highest- although reports indicate it can begin as early as the first few weeks of pregnancy.

Symptoms - sever itching, dark urine, pale stools, fatigue, loss of appetite, mild depression

Risks - premature birth, hemorrhaging, fetal distress and stillbirth

Note: Only a small number of labs across the world have the right equipment to run this test, this can result in considerable delay. Thank goodness we live so close to the Mayo Clinic! Even with the Mayo close it still took 3 or 4 days to get my test results back.
Why I Thought I had ICP : My mom knew my symptons and told me I needed to have them test me and only because I asked they tested me ( with it being so rare they don't test for this very often or normally ).  I itched like you would not believe, an itch that doesnt go away ( i would use credit cards to try and itch my feet and hands ).  I could not wear socks or boots in winter because I would itch and sleeping at night was horrible.  I would be up for hours itching my feet and hands non stop. It was a horrible feeling and I would cry and cry at night because I could not stop it, nothing helped.
When I was induced with Avin at 34 weeks my levels where at a 50 and 10 is normal.  They would not let me leave the hospital ( even to pack my bags ) even though I sat in a hospital room for 6 hours waiting for results of the amnio.  Thank god it came back that her lungs were mature ( I was not leaving that nice new hospital ) and I was induced that night and she was born the next morning!

2/11/2010 - 2/15/2010

Avin is currently being treated for jaundice. She is laying on the bili blanket and looks like she is tanning. Hopefully she will be off of the lights tomorrow and her levels will stay normal.

A common condition in newborns, jaundice refers to the yellow color of the skin and whites of the eyes caused by excess bilirubin in the blood. Bilirubin is produced by the normal breakdown of red blood cells.

Physiological (normal) jaundice: occurring in most newborns, this mild jaundice is due to the immaturity of the baby's liver, which leads to a slow processing of bilirubin. It generally appears at 2 to 4 days of age and disappears by 1 to 2 weeks of age.
